Rotary Park gets a fresh start through Scout community project

Scouts and Rovers clean up and plant at Rotary Park through collaboration with the Rotary Club of Bedfordview and Better Bedfordview as part of the second Africa Scout Moot.

Thanks to collaborative efforts by Scouts/Rovers, the Rotary Club of Bedfordview, and Better Bedfordview, Rotary Park was cleaned up and a new garden was set up.

Rotarian Jane Malinsky shared that the Scouts conducted a community service on August 4 and 5. She added that the group of Scouts and Rovers helped sort out books and linen at the Rotary humanitarian centre, which are distributed to various schools and old age homes around the country.

These activities were part of the second Africa Scout Moot 2026.

Organising chair for the second Africa Scout Moot, Damian Lahoud, said the service of goodwill happened at Arrowe Park, Benoni, from August 1 to 8.

He said Rotary and Scouts partnered on some service projects within the region.

“A moot is a gathering of rovers, which are scouts between the ages of 18 and 26; very similar to Rotaractors within the Rotary organisation. A moot is a name for a Rover Jamboree.”

Lahoud added that this is held every four years and this was the second time it was held in the African region.

The chair further said it was an opportunity to bring Rovers or young adult scouters from across the world together.

Five hundred Rovers from 38 different countries are expected to converge in Benoni. He said the event would provide an exciting opportunity to showcase programmes for older Scouts, while also offering opportunities for personal development, cultural understanding and collaboration on global challenges.

“We’re going to inspire future projects. Essentially, at the end of the day, it is about inspiring young people from across the continent and around the globe,” he said.

Lahoud explained that there’s a long history of partnership between Rotary and Scouts.

Firstly, he said, there is the official International Fellowship of Scouting and Guiding Rotarians, an organisation made up of Scouts and Rotarians from around the world who come together to support Scout groups and their work globally.

Lahoud also called for support for the Ubuntu community service initiative. Each participant will have the opportunity to choose from one of five overnight adventures. He explained that, while travelling to the various activities, the Rovers would be encouraged to stop and participate in community service projects along the way.

“When the Rovers travel to these various activities, we’d like them to stop and do some community service along the way. They can do tree planting, painting, gardening, playground restoration, fixing fences, cleaning parks, litter picking and so on,” he said.

Between 30 and 40 participants are expected to take part in these activities across various communities over two days.
