Therapeutic Reflexology, a healing aid

There are various mediums that many explore to heal their bodies and one of them is Therapeutic Reflexology.

Therapeutic Reflexology is a complementary healing therapy that is performed on the feet with the thumb and fingers of a therapist.

The feet reflect the organs of the body and are identified by means of pressure points known as reflexes, as well as energy channels, known as meridians.

This is achieved by manipulating and applying pressure on the reflexes of the feet, congestion or blockages, assisting the body to heal itself.

Today, Therapeutic Reflexology is regulated by The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa and as such, all therapeutic reflexologists have to be registered with the council.

“Therapeutic Reflexology may not necessarily cure or heal an ailment, but what it will do is assist the body to heal itself and to reach a state of balance, good health and a sense of wellbeing,” said Therapeutic Reflexologist, Ms Karin Helberg.

She said that during a treatment session a person may experience discomfort as the feet may be sore and tense. As the session progresses, one may find relaxation and may even fall asleep. A treatment session takes between 45 to 60 minutes and follow up treatments are usually advisable to assist the body to reach a state of wellness.

“The benefits of Therapeutic Reflexology are many and varied, these include reduction in stress resulting in a feeling of calm, improved circulation, improved sleeping patterns, pain relief, elimination of toxins, improved digestion, improvement in blood sugar levels, problems with ovulation and PMS, constipation, assisting with headaches and much more,” said Ms Helberg.
