Resident asks if squatting is illegal

I would like to respond to an article featured in the Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS regarding Edenvale’s flood damaged bridges.

Not only are their vagrants living between the bridges, but also further down toward First Avenue under the willow trees.

The state of the bank of the river under the two willow trees is shocking to say the least.I have, on numerous occasions, phoned my security company to investigate the illegal activities under these trees and have been told that they cannot do anything as they have been informed by the police that they cannot remove the vagrants.

I thought squatting in public parks was illegal?

EDITOR’S COMMENT – Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago commented as follows:

The Edenvale precinct conducts regular operations aimed at removing vagrants from all over Edenvale where land belonging to council is invaded.

These operations are normally commenced in the early mornings in order to catch the culprits while they are asleep to remove them.

Unfortunately, they keep on coming back and thus there is little we can do to prevent such, aside from continuing to remove them.
