Editor – Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) has learnt with a heavy heart of the death of local environmental activist, Mr Gerald Heine.
Mr Heine was instrumental in establishing various groups to ensure that the integrity of Rhodes Park and portions of the green corridors in Kensington were maintained in a pristine condition.
His stance was that, as a collective, we are all custodians of the environment and we needed to ensure the recreational needs of communities were balanced with the ecological needs of the environment.
More importantly, Mr Heine was quite vocal on shortfalls of services within the park and at the same time, always acknowledged the good work undertaken by the JCPZ.
His legacy of championing green nodes in Rhodes Park, and remaining steadfast against commercial development, will continue to benefit generations of residents living adjacent to the facility and visitors to the facility.
On behalf of the executive mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Parks Tau, and the management of the JCPZ, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Heine family on their loss of a great mind and local eco-champion.
Jenny Moodley,
Spokesperson of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.
