Reader questions toll fees

The money collected must improve our roads, be used for Gauteng roads, not leave South Africa, not pay grossly inflated salaries and not be abused in any way.

EDITOR – In principle I do not object to collecting tolls electronically. But the amount collected per kilometre must be reasonable. The 66c per kilometre, for example, is a rip off. In fact, 15c per kilometre is a rip off.

The money collected must improve our roads, be used for Gauteng roads, not leave South Africa, not pay grossly inflated salaries and not be abused in any way.

The likelihood of corruption in the collection of toll fees and in following up non payers is, I believe, over 90 percent – as is the likelihood of gross incompetence in administration.

As an honest taxpayer, I am not prepared to be ripped off even more.

ST ANDREWS.
