Going green important to school

Elands Park School was the centre of an urban greening project to add new life to the learning landscape.

The project was undertaken by Liberty Properties and Aveng Grinaker LTA. Volunteers from the companies, along with the help of pupils from the school, planted ten new trees.

“Our school is currently considered 70 percent green and, through this project, we are closer to reaching our goal of having a 100 percent green school. We are working towards ensuring all our plant and tree life is indigenous,” said Josua Du Plessis, the deputy principle at Elands Park School.

“We believe that by promoting a green environment, it naturally creates a more peaceful surrounding,” he added.

Both companies share a mutual commitment to sustainability and community involvement.

The managing director of Liberty Properties, Maurice Mdlolo, said the project aligns with the company’s strategy to support initiatives that, directly or indirectly, promote education.

He also emphasised the company’s commitment to being a responsible business, with an obligation to the value of sustainability.

“It is critical that the next generation adopts a culture of planting and replacing trees for the longevity of our planet,” said Mdlolo.

“Our tree-planting exercise presents an opportunity to further enhance the learning landscape for students, leaving a positive and lasting legacy. Apart from the obvious environmental benefits, community upliftment is central to this project,” added Brian Wilmot, the managing director of Aveng Grinaker LTA.
