Bedfordview karatekas excel in Durban

The fact that the athletes competed in 29 finals at this tournament shows that the hard work and hours of dedication are paying off.

Karatekas from Goju Kai Karate Academy in Bedfordview excelled when they competed at the Karate South Africa Elite Championships.

Hosted in Durban, the championships saw the dojo’s athletes achieving top four places.

The dojo won 38 medals – 21 gold, eight silver and nine bronze.

The tournament saw the best South African karatekas attend to improve their ranking and cement their place in the South African team for the Commonwealth Karate Championships in September and the UFAK African Continental Championships to be held at the end of November.

Shihan Russell Sim said the athletes spent hours honing their skills outside their normal training times, making sure that they are 100% ready for each competition.

“This requires massive dedication on the part of the students and their sensei, to do that extra punch, block or kick to ensure their chances of winning,” said Sim.

“The fact that the athletes competed in 29 finals at this tournament shows that the hard work and hours of dedication paid off.”
