St Benedict’s College wins rowing championship

The rowing championship for this year was held at St Andrew’s School for Girls.

The 2022 Gauteng Junior Rowing Championships was held in partnership with Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) at Roodeplaat Dam between November 4 and 6.

Around 800 athletes from 18 schools and clubs participated, with close to 1 000 spectators. The tournament is the championship event of the Gauteng Schools Rowing Federation (GSRF).

St Benedict’s College were the overall champion.

• King Edward VII School

• Jeppe High School for Boys

• Parktown Boys’ High School

• St Stithians Boys’ College

• St John’s College

• St Benedict’s College

• St Alban’s College

• Wemmer Pan Rowing Club

• Soweto Rowing Club

• Hilton College (KZN)

• Mare-Pula (Botswana)

“Supporting rowing at all levels is key to our sponsorship of the sport. It is encouraging to see a number of development rowing teams participating in this year’s event,” said Lucy Lightfoot, head of brand at RMB.

“Being exposed to competition at this level is a vital part in the growth of young rowers, some of whom have the potential to represent South Africa on the international stage.”

The RMB national squad partnered with Gauteng Junior Rowing Championships to host a selection trial regatta.

“Having RMB as an event partner allows us to host a professional and memorable event for all the athletes and spectators,” said St Andrew’s foundation manager, Caterina Cannone.

St Benedict’s College has been crowned winners of the 2022 Gauteng Junior Rowing Championships held at Roodeplaat Dam.

Jamie Croly, St Andrew’s head rowing coach, added: “Along with the SA Schools Championships in March, this regatta is a highlight of many rowers’ season and is very important in the development of athletes.”
