Edenvale bowler aims for the jack

Mathews Phiri came out on top six out of seven times.

Mathews Phiri of the Edenvale Bowling Club represented Ekurhuleni at the SA Masters Singles Championships held in Cape Town at the Western Province Cricket Club from March 17 to 19.

Beaten only once in the round-robin section (seven rounds), he contested the final.

Every round went to sudden death. Phiri came out on top six out of seven times.

Niksa Benguric of Pretoria hung on to win by one point in a sudden death and took gold 8-7, 3-17 and 2-1.

Although Mathews won silver, his Edenvale club described him as a 24ct gold asset to them.

Besides Phiri, the Edenvale Bowling Club saw three other bowlers selected to represent Ekurhuleni Bowls at the SA Masters for the singles competition.

They are Gerald May (men’s veterans), Jenny Jones (women’s veterans) and Elizanne du Toit (women’s junior).
