Reddam House twins showcase their talents on a world stage

Twins, Diego and Phoenix are representing South Africa in the world of sport.

Nine-year-old twins from Reddam House Bedfordview, Phoenix and Diego Berardone are leaving their mark in their respective sports – motorsport and gymnastics.

Diego will represent South Africa for the second time at the Tillotson Nations Cup from September 21 to 24 in Spain, making him the youngest racer to qualify for the South African Tillotson Racing Team both times.

Meanwhile, Phoenix received her junior central Gauteng colours in June for rhythmic gymnastics, competing in free and hoop routines.

She competed in group gymnastics, which resulted in her receiving her senior central Gauteng colours and qualifying for the South African gym games in October.

His father introduced Diego to the sport just before his seventh birthday.

He said the adrenaline rush, competitiveness, and speed go-karting offers are some things he loves about the sport.

His dedication and skill have earned him the prestigious South African Tillotson championship for two consecutive years.

“I have training once or twice a week, but I am on my home cart rig daily,” he said.

He said some of his challenges have been competing against older opponents, dealing with intimidation and overcoming accidents.

Beyond motorsport, Diego also takes part in soccer and athletics.

Phoenix, who also started around the same age, captivated audiences with her grace and precision in rhythmic gymnastics.

Diego Berardone (9) is heading to Spain for the Tillotson world cup.

“I love to do gymnastics; I love handstands, so before my 7th birthday I asked my parents if I could do gym,” she said.

Her group will be the youngest competitors in the upcoming tournament.

“I feel happy and excited about my achievements. What excites me the most is that you go out there and have fun. It is also exciting to be working in a team. They are good friends of mine,” she added.

The pair’s mother Crystal said, “What’s beautiful about watching this process is witnessing two dedicated and committed young individuals grow in this world, and they carry their dedication into the classroom, being outstanding learners and sportsmen at such a young age.

“It takes a lot of sacrifices, but as a family, we are proud of them and thankful to their amazing coaches.”
