Bedfordview’s Carstens dancers excel at SAIBC
Chiara Szabo and 13 other dancers from Carstens Ireland Ballet School delivered standout performances at the 12th SAIBC in Cape Town, with Chiara reaching the junior top 12 and the studio winning multiple choreography awards.
Chiara Szabo represented her studio, Carstens Ireland Ballet School, at the 12th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) held in Cape Town from July 28 to 31.
Reflecting on the event, she described the four-day competition as both exhausting and immensely rewarding.
“It was such a positive atmosphere. I had the chance to meet so many incredible dancers from all over South Africa and the world,” she said.

The prestigious event welcomed more than 130 dancers from across South Africa’s provinces and from countries including South Korea, Cuba, the USA, Spain, and Kenya.

A standout moment for Chiara was performing the Coppélia pas de deux alongside Miguel Franco-Green, with permission from Joburg Ballet.
“It couldn’t have gone better. The feedback we received reminded me why I dance – to share my joy with the audience,” she shared.
Chiara advanced to the final round of the junior category, placing in the top 12 out of 60 competitors.
Although she admitted that her final solo performance did not meet her expectations, she remains positive and focused on growth.
