Excitement was in the air when Golden Lions player Henco van Wyk spent time with the youth of Edenvale Rugby Club.
The number 13 player drilled the Panthers on the basics of the sport during their weekly training session on August 21 in preparation for the start of their league.
The junior Panthers kicked off their league on August 23 in Vereeniging.
Chairperson of the junior Panthers, Andrew Walker, who knows Van Wyk, explained that the Lions player is passionate about the sport and offered to give up his time to inspire, teach and motivate the club members.
“The boys were excited for Henco to be here; it’s motivating for the players,” said Walker.
“There are a few clubs that I know of that have the opportunity to invite players of this calibre to their practices.”
Van Wyk encouraged the players to enjoy the sport as much as possible.
Coming from a rugby family, Van Wyk started playing rugby at the age of six.
Speaking about what makes a good rugby player, he said it is often the one who enjoys the sport the most.
“There is a lot of pressure, sometimes from school, but the one thing that we can always enjoy is rugby.”
He reminded the players to set achievable goals and to work hard towards those goals.
