Wasps Rugby Club clinches double Grand Challenge titles under Bastion lights

Wasps Senior Rugby Club proved its growing dominance in Gauteng rugby, with both the U19 and senior teams lifting Grand Challenge trophies at Hoërskool Bastion. The wins mark a milestone for the young club, which continues to attract players and supporters as it builds towards future success.

Wasps Senior Rugby Club has cemented its reputation as one of Gauteng’s fastest-rising rugby forces, securing two Grand Challenge titles on August 15 under the floodlights at Hoërskool Bastion.

The first triumph came from the Wasps U19 side, who outplayed Roodepoort Rugby Club 19–8. Strong defensive discipline and sharp attacking execution made it clear the team was there to win, not just participate.

Soon after, the club’s senior side took to the field in a nail-biting clash. The game saw momentum swing both ways, but in the final minutes, Luca Biffi crashed over for the decisive try, sealing a 30–22 victory.

“It’s a moment I’ll never forget,” Biffi said. “This club has given us everything this season; this win is for the Wasps family.”

Founded in 2023, the club has steadily grown to 106 members, fielding four teams across multiple divisions. A merger with the Alex Wolves earlier this year injected talent and depth, strengthening the squad.

“It was about creating opportunity,” said Chairperson Lance Harris. “Bringing the Wolves into the fold gave us firepower, and the results show it.”

Head coach Garreth Stein praised the balance of experienced players and hungry youngsters, while Club Manager Carla Miller highlighted the players’ commitment and character.

Match days at the high school field have become a fixture in the community calendar, attracting families, friends, and former players.

“Whether you’re 18 or 38, a seasoned player or just picking up a ball, there’s a place for you here,” Harris said.

With eyes on all four divisions for 2026, the club is calling on aspiring players to join and be part of a team rewriting the local rugby script.
