Bedfordview team impresses at elite martial arts world championship
Karatekas from Blackbelt Martial Arts competed in Top 10 and Elite Super 20 events, bringing back medals and expertise to South Africa.
Several members of Blackbelt Martial Arts – Taekwondo Academy, Bedfordview, recently travelled to Arizona, USA, where they represented South Africa in one of the largest martial arts world championships.
While overseas, the local karatekas competed in two elite events.
Marissa Katz, Faiyaz Khan, Muhammad Khan and Husanyn Samrod competed in the world Top 10, where there are no weight or height rules.

In this category, competition is based purely on rank and age; however, competitors must earn points throughout the year by placing at various competitions.
These events featured athletes from the USA, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Europe, India and Argentina.
The four karatekas said it was an incredible experience competing against such phenomenal world-class athletes.
In the Elite Super 20 Tournament, chief instructor Faiyaz Khan earned two bronze medals for sparring and creative form.
First-time World Championship competitors Adam Jellin and Cayden Naicker shone brightly in the colour belt division. Jellin was awarded three silver medals for traditional weapon, combat weapon and sparring, as well as a bronze for creative weapon.

Naicker earned one gold medal for creative weapon and one silver for creative form.
Co-owner and chief instructor Marissa Katz also tested for her fifth-degree black belt during the championships and is eagerly awaiting her results.
The team also trained alongside world-class masters in specialised seminars, bringing fresh skills, knowledge and inspiration back to South Africa.
