Rowing champs result in double win for local schools

Brother and sister schools, Holy Rosary School and St Benedict’s College, finish tops overall respectively at the national Buffalo Regatta and bring home trophies.

St Benedict’s College was immensely proud to celebrate a standout weekend for its rowing community.

This experience was shared with their brother-and-sister school, Holy Rosary School, at the Buffalo and Selborne Regattas in East London from February 6 to 8.

Head of marketing, communications and admissions at St Benedict’s, Mpumi Motsabi, reported that in a powerful show of unity and excellence, Holy Rosary School finished as the top girls’ school overall to lifting the girls’ school points trophy at the Buffalo Regatta.

Meanwhile, St Benedict’s College claimed the boys’ school points trophy.

“This ‘double win’ at a national-level regatta reflects not only strong performances on the water, but also the depth and quality of rowing across our shared school community,” Motsabi noted.

She said that what made the achievement even more remarkable was that circumstances were not ideal for all of the St Benedict’s crews, with several rowers battling illness in the lead-up to, and during, the weekend.

St Benedict’s College claim the boys’ school points trophy.

Despite this, Motsabi acknowledged that the boys showed real grit and commitment, supporting one another and pushing through to deliver performances worthy of the Bennies’ name.

“Across both regattas, our combined rowing programmes produced a series of excellent results, proof of the discipline and dedication of our athletes, and the unwavering commitment of our coaching teams who continue to invest in every rower’s development,” she said.

Motsabi added that these regattas also provided valuable racing experience and momentum as both schools build toward the South African Schools Rowing Championships in early March, where the St Benedict’s rowers will once again compete against the best school programmes in the country.

“We congratulate every rower from HRS and St Benedict’s who represented their schools with pride and sportsmanship, and we thank the coaches, parents and supporters whose encouragement makes weekends like these possible.

“We wish all our rowers the very best in their final preparations for schools’ champs. May they continue to race with courage, unity and pride.”
