Funds raised for pets

Ms Hazel Moller and Mr Eric Wright took up the ‘Washie 100 Miler’ Challenge on the 18th and 19th of July.

They ran from East London to Port Alfred and then back to East London – a total distance of 322 kilometers.

Hazel is the first person to ever do a double and complete the ‘Washie 100 Miler’ race.

Hazel is from Germiston and Eric is from Edenvale. The two ran the race in order to raise funds for animal rescue organisations.

For Hazel, the first leg of the challenge was tough. Eric had started the day before the official start of the race. They began with very tough conditions, starting the race in humid weather conditions, which brought rain that turned into a storm.

This brought cold winds that raced at 40 kilometres per hour for about 120 kilometres.

It was with great determination and endurance that they completed the first part of the challenge in about 20,5 hours, arriving in Port Alfred about five hours before the official start of the race.

Hazel completed the official race in 23 hours, coming in 34th overall. In total, Hazel ran for 43,5 hours to complete the 322 kilometres.

Unfortunately, Eric could not go any further and stopped 44 kilometres into the second leg, having completed a total of 204 kilometres.

“Congratulations to both Hazel and Eric for taking on this challenge and a round of applause to Hazel for doing exceptionally well and completing the challenge and raising so much money for rescued animals,” said Mrs Kate Georgiades, from Pet Finda. The rescue organisation funds were raised for Pet Finda, Burrows Rescue, PETS Witbank and PETS Cape Town.

“We thank Hazel and Eric for running to create awareness of the plight of abused, neglected and abandoned animals and for putting themselves through this challenge to help raise much needed money for these rescuers,” concluded Mrs Georgiades.

The target was R70 000 and R27 313 was raised. The donation line is still open for anyone wanting to make a donation on www.backabuddy.co.za/washies100-miler.
