Dreamkillers off to a smashing start
The Bedfordview Last Man Stands (LMS) summer cricket league kicked off last weekend.
In one of the first league games of the season, which took place on Friday night, the Tool Saders took on Hydromine Dreamkillers at the Jeppe Quondam sports complex.
The Dreamkillers won the toss and elected to bat first.
The decision paid off when the Tool Saders were left to chase a target of 150 in their allotted 20 overs.
Opening batsmen for the Dreamkillers, skipper Andre Schultz and Jason Donuhue, set the bar high for fellow batsmen when after six overs the duo were on 62 runs.
Shortly after the start of the seventh over, Jason was caught and the Tool Saders quickly made use of the double-play rule in LMS cricket – which saw both opening batsmen back on the bench.
In the double-play rule, two players can be dismissed off the same delivery and this can either be done through a caught out or run out decision.
When the strike batsman is caught out, the non-striker has to return to the bowler’s end of the pitch. Failing to do so results in the dismissal of both batsmen.
Malcolm Gower and Heinrich Schultz were next to face the bowling attack of the Tool Saders and managed to take the Dreamkillers to a final score of 149 for two after 20 overs.
“We chose to bat first knowing we could easily defend even 100 runs with our strong bowling line-up,” said Andre.
“As our first official league game, it was important that we win to get the team off to a flying start for the season ahead,” he said.
The Dreamkillers’ top batsmen were Heinrich, who hit 41 runs of just 37 balls and Malcolm, who smashed 46 runs off 28 balls.
Batsman, Jason also made his mark with 33 runs of 22 balls.
Dreamkillers’ bowlers were able to restrict the Tool Saders to just 121 runs after 20 overs for the loss of six wickets.
Bowler, Quintan Naude, took top honours in the line-up with two wickets for 19 runs in four overs.
Dale Gower further restricted the batting attack of the Tool Saders when he went for just 22 runs in his four overs.
“Our bowlers showed discipline, which gave us the edge,” said Andre.
Man of the match went to Malcolm Gower, with his unbeaten 46 of only 28 balls.
