Taekwon-Do club brings home medals
Members of the Mister Knuckles Taekwon-Do Gym recently brought home several medals after they competed in the regional championships.
Members of the Malvern-based gym took part in the Magua Taekwon-Do Club Regional Championships on October 19. The championships were held at the Scott Gymnasium at the Wits Education Campus in Parktown.
The tournament’s events included sparring, patterns, power breaking and special technique breaking (aerial kicks).
Denis Magua, the fifth Dan head-instructor of the club, was impressed by the standard of the tournament and even more proud of his students who brought home 16 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze medals in various divisions. The younger members, aged five to seven years old, also brought back six gold medals for the Tiger course.
Denis said that any medals brought home by the club are shared by all.
“Without each other, there can be no victory as every person in the club has helped to get the competitors to where they are.”
Taekwon-Do is a Korean martial art with a sporting side to it. This however, is not the sole focus of the art. With roots in the military, its main purpose is combat effectiveness and self-defence. It is also great for building fitness, flexibility and self-confidence in adults and children.
