Italy FC triumphs over Mighty Chiefs FC
Mighty Chiefs FC, who are from Jeppestown, were defending from the first whistle.
Malvern’s Italy FC walked away 1-0 winners in the clash against their less fancied opponents, Mighty Chiefs FC.
The match was played at the Rhodes Park Sports Grounds on Saturday, May 17.
Mighty Chiefs FC, who are from Jeppestown, were defending from the first whistle. They were kept in their own half, making no effort to attack Italy FC’s defence.
The ‘Italians’, as they are affectionately known, capitalised on their wing play, using crosses to put pressure on the Mighty FC defence.
Italy FC failed to convert a number of chances and were let down by their strikers. It was 0-0 at half-time.
Italy FC displayed renewed energy in the second half, pushing forward and searching for a goal. Both teams made substitutions, but the fresh legs did not have the desired effect on the game, as more scoring opportunities were missed. It was in the late stages of the match when a loose ball was intercepted from a Mighty FC defender, leaving the defence exposed and allowing an Italy FC player to get sight of the goal and score, placing the ball in the net and sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Italy FC supporters descended on the field to celebrate. It was a good for Italy FC, who have won their last four outings. @JoburgJourno
