Greens assistant becomes bowls champion

While doing his job, he said he would see people playing bowls at the club but never paid attention to it until Mr Bill Morehen introduced him to the game about a year ago.

It is hard to believe that one year ago, Matthew Phiri knew nothing about bowling.

Matthew recently became the first black player to win a club championship title at the Edenvale Bowling Club.

Matthew started working at the Edenvale Bowling club as a greens assistant five years ago.

While doing his job, he said he would see people playing bowls at the club but never paid attention to it until Mr Bill Morehen introduced him to the game about a year ago.

Matthew is now a champion after winning the Open Singles Championships held at the Edenvale Bowling club on June 14.

“When I started playing bowls I didn’t know anything about bowling. Now I enjoy playing it,” said Matthew.

Matthew, who was visibly excited about his win, said being the Open Singles Champion means a lot to him and he hopes that one day he will represent South Africa at an international event.

He said he would not have come this far if it was not for the support he received from the president of Edenvale Bowling Club, Mr Gerald May and Mr Lance Sayce, as well as the committee.

“If not for the members of the bowling club, I would not have won this championship. I knew nothing about bowls and they taught me everything I know,” said Matthew.

On August 9, Matthew will be playing in the EBC Skins Tournament, which consists of all the quarter-finalists from the men and women’s events.
