Independence celebrated through sport

November 11 marked the Angolan Independence Day and as part of the celebrations, sport fanatics came together to commemorate.
As part of the pre-celebrations, four soccer teams participated in a tournament on November 5.
Organiser, Arlindo Palulo, said teams of Angolan youngsters compete in the tournament every year.
“We host the tournament a week before, leading up to the main event starting with four teams. The teams that win in their respective games then go through to the finals, which will be played at Jeppe Quondam,” said Palulo.
He said after the final game is played, the players as well as young people, all from Angola, are treated to a gala dinner.
Also present at the tournament were officials from the Angolan Embassy.
Palulo said the tournament is an annual event that was launched in 2000.
He said the tournament also takes place on other significant dates on the Angolan calendar.
“We also get together during the birthdays of our former and current presidents, which are August 25 and September 26,” said Palulo.
