Grade 8 pupil of Queens High School, Dareshen Pather, recently participated in the 18th FSKA World Cup Shotokan Karate Championships held in India.
The 14-year-old represented the Association of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate South Africa (AFSKSA) in his first international tournament.
Pather participated in three categories including kata, kumite and team kumite and came first in all three, bringing home three gold medals for South Africa.
“I thank God for his favour upon my life, I thank my parents for supporting me in my love for karate and, most of all, I thank and salute my mentor in karate Sensai Adrian Govender of AFSKSA, Edenvale,” said Pather.
This young karate champ started karate at the age of eight and has been growing in the sport since then. “I’m passionate about the sport and would like to see myself go far,” said Pather.
