Corinthians basketball players aim for a slam dunk

“What is unknown to the masses is that the facility is also home to the basketball team Corinthians BWA (Ballers With Altitude)"

Edenglen resident Sango Velaphi (23) recently joined the senior men’s basketball club at Corinthians Sporting Club in Bedfordview.

According to Velaphi, the club is well known for being the practice facilities of the Mpumalanga Football Club.

“What is unknown to the masses is that the facility is also home to the basketball team Corinthians BWA (Ballers With Altitude),” said Velaphi.

Velaphi is the captain of the team and wants to gain support from the community.

“I thought it would be a positive for the club, both senior and junior, to gain the attention and support of the community with the hope of pushing basketball and the development of the sport forwards,” he said.

The team was formed in 2014.

“It started as a social club for guys who just wanted to get together and bond over hoops, but as time progressed so did they. Winning the Bethusile Winter Tournament in 2014, making it to the Division 2 Inner City Super League (ICSL), and with the addition of a few fresh faces, they were able to make it to the Division 2 ICSL finals but unfortunately lost in the end.”

“We have a new goal, purpose and vision. Corinthians BWA is now ready to face the challenges set for them in the Division 2 Johannesburg Basketball League (JBL), to win the championship, and take them to new heights,” he explained.

Velaphi also pointed out that the association with the Corinthians club had also seen the creation of the Corinthians Junior Basketball Academy.

“The academy offers players from the age of 10 and under the opportunity to level and up their ability to develop their basketball skills in a caring and nurturing environment while still remaining competitive in the JBL Junior League.”
