Local resident Peter Dunnett, a member of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club, was one of the single K1 paddlers who did the tough training event to improve his fitness and stamina. He finished still smiling, in two hours and eight minutes, as the 12th single K1 finisher.

The event is for serious paddlers as well as a social race for the less fit and for the younger paddlers.

The paddling race comprising15kms broken by a running portage through the park near the dam of 3km, was a very competitive event with some close finishes.

The FNB Dusi takes place from February 15 to 17. Last year, with no water due to drought conditions, the paddlers almost ran most of the way to Durban on day three.

Run training is, therefore, an essential part of a successful finish of this race – the world’s toughest canoe endurance event.
