Tumisho dances his way to Italy

“I really don’t feel I’m limited by the hearing impairment I was born with.”

Tumisho Mabelane has not allowed his hearing impairment to stop him from reaching his full potential in dancing.

The 13-year-old learner from Glenoaks School in Kensington has obtained his full regional and South African colours in dance under arts and culture.

He said dancing has always been a passion and when Kezone from Edenglen came to the school he grabbed the opportunity to learn more.

“I always liked dancing. When the hip-hop dance group practised at my school, I used to watch them over the fence or from outside the window. One day the teacher called me in to dance with the group. That was three years ago and now I’m going to represent my country,” said Tumisho.

He performed a hip-hop solo that qualified him to represent South Africa in Italy next year.

“I feel very excited and proud of myself as I can now represent my province and my country. Nothing can stop me from reaching my goals as long as I put my mind to it,” said Tumisho.

He said he looks forward to seeing what other countries have to offer.

“I feel very proud and excited as I always wished for an opportunity to travel the world. I’m also looking forward to seeing how they do hip-hop dancing,” said Tumisho.

He said he faces his challenges by focusing on the task at hand.

“The challenge I face as a dancer is I wear a hearing device which I use for hearing. It’s key to my performance because I need to hear the music when I perform. I need to make sure it stays intact, does not fall.

“I really need to be focused on two things simultaneously which can be difficult when I dance,” explained Tumisho.

He said dancing needs commitment but his family has played a big role.

“My parents have been very supportive and I thank and appreciate them for that. My sister helps me by dancing with me when I practice. They are just amazing,” said Tumisho.

The dancer is also asking for donations towards his trip to Italy.

“I would appreciate donations, as it is going to be an expensive trip to Italy. Dancers have to cover their own costs,” said Tumisho.
