Squash still an unrecognised sport in SA
Jeppe Quondam President says squash is still an unrecognised sport in South Africa, and that more needs to be done.
Jeppe Quondam Sports Club hosted the final day of the South African (SA) Masters Inter-provincial Doubles Championships in the men’s squash event on November 10.
The event marked the 14th time that the tournament has been held annually, dating back to 2004.

Held at various venues across the nine provinces, sports clubs share co-hosting duties to accommodate hundreds of competitive squash players who participate.
This year’s event attracted in excess of 500 participants, according to president at Jeppe Quondam Sports Club, Bob Hunting, himself a competitive squash player at 69 years old.

Speaking on the sidelines of the tournament, Huntington admitted that the sport was gradually diminishing in popularity, especially among the young.

“We still struggle to get squash promoted and to attract sponsorship,” said Huntington.
“Fortunately, however, world squash championships now receive coverage on television but locally it is very difficult to get coverage.”

To remedy this hurdle, Huntington said local media backing and youth participation is needed.

“We need youngsters to come back to join clubs. Squash is particularly beneficial to them as it helps with concentration, keeps the body fit and is also a very sociable sport.”
