Tiny tennis player takes first place in national tournament

Eight-year-old Tristan van der Merwe recently competed in the Gauteng East Growth Point Super 8 Tournament where he won the u-10 category.

Van der Merwe, from Dunvegan-based Merrylyn Tennis Club, competed against junior players from across SA at the event.

With an 89.9 per cent win rate, van der Merwe only lost six games of the 55 he played at the tournament.

After placing first in his group in the round robin, van der Merwe faced off against Meider Erasmus in the semi-final and won 9-2.

Proceeding into the finals van der Merwe played against Frederik Rheeder who he also beat 9-2.

Merrylyn Tennis Club was established in 1963 by the municipality for the residents of Dunvegan and is run by Dunvegan residents.

Despite being 56-years-old, the club is going strong with junior and senior members competing in central Gauteng leagues.
