KenRho Park Tennis Club is open for business and welcomes all.

KenRho Park Tennis Club (KPTC) in Kensington has bookmarked a new page in its history with the welcoming of a new chairperson into the club’s ranks.

Taking the helm and charged with expanding the spectrum of the tennis activity in the area is Serge Fookune, himself is an avid tennis player.

The Malaysian-born incumbent and resident of Bertrams is amped to charge in hard as he looks to promote energy and enthusiasm, that is sure to keep its members and those who visit, a refreshing tennis experience.

Situated next to Rhodes Park, Fookune said the club is open for business to people from all walks of life, regardless of their tennis playing abilities or economic circumstances.

“Whether or not you can afford it, everybody is welcome to play tennis at KPTC. Ultimately, those who can, help those who cannot,” Fookune expressed.

“Children and adults of all ages can now come play at KPTC, and there is considerable effort towards making them feel welcome. The club is impressionable on all who come to it. It has an inviting atmosphere that now prevails; which new members to the club enjoy, all while taking in the natural view that Rhodes Park provides.”

Meanwhile, Fookune noted a stark decline in membership at the club. He points this to the migration of previous members, prior to his tenure, to a club in a neighbouring suburb.

“The reasons are not clear, but it does provide opportunities for the community, especially those living in close proximity. The club has limited funds with the current membership, but hopefully the benefit of playing tennis will change that.

“Rhodes Park facilities, such as the restaurant that was once so popular, is now in a state of ruin. However, there are plans to turn this around.

“Kensington residents and organisation, such as I Love Kensington, are constantly participating in ways to make Rhodes Park a place to be proud of. Volunteers regularly come together to pick up trash at the grounds,” said Fookune.

With all of this in mind, the new chairperson is adamant that his initial desire to keep the club afloat will be his weapon of first resort in driving the club forward.

He harbours no doubt that his realisation to make a difference in the community, which stems from his passion of engaging with people, particularly children, will be just as important.

Fookune calls on the community to form part of the KPTC dream.

“The club needs the community to become part of it. It has all the elements for community building, whether in the form of a game of tennis or a family picnic, one cannot deny the massive benefits that come with such outdoor activities,” he said.
