She received the nod alongside the stellar cast of javelin star and South African women’s cricket team player Tazmin Brits and multiple World Transplant Games medalist Heilie Uys.
Still over the moon from achieving a black belt in the Korean martial arts form combat tang soo do, for which she is an instructor at Wits Tang Soo Do Dojang, Ramburuth-Hurt makes the GSport finalists list for the Special Recognition Award.
The long-time Kensington resident and Jeppe High School for Girls alumnus spoke volumes of the importance of the award, in the context of empowering and uplifting female sports athletes in the country.
“I first heard of the GSport Awards in 2017 when I had the opportunity to facilitate a Gauteng Women in Sport dialogue at Wits University.
“At the time, I was on the Wits Sport Council that had just initiated the first Gender Equity in Sport portfolio, onto the committee.
” As the officer in charge of this portfolio, I took a lot of inspiration from the GSport initiative, and from the work it was doing in advocating for equality, fairness and representation of women in South African sport.
“This spoke to me directly because I was advocating for the same within my university community.
” To be recognised for this work and for my sporting achievements by the GSport initiative is beyond exciting. It is such an honour to be among the best of the best in South African sport, and I will be using this platform to further the fight for equality, fairness and representation of women in sport,” said Ramburuth-Hurt.
The 2019 GSport Awards will be held on August 31.
