Bronze medals were won by Phumelele Ngwenya, Marco Botha, Gabriella Toweel, Arnoldus van der Merwe and Jacques Roux.

“The SA Goju Kai nationals are an annual tournament and this year’s tournament was special as it is the first of two selection tournaments to select a South African Goju Kai team which will compete at the eighth IKGA Global Championships to be held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2021,” said Sim.

The final selection for the team will be at the 44th National Championships being held in Cape Town in 2020.

“The medalists were very excited with their achievements, as the IKGA Global Championships is only held every four years and the medalists are now in the running to make the team for Japan, the home of karate.” said Sim.
