Goju Kai awarded Ekurhuleni colours
To qualify for Ekurhuleni karate colours, the athletes had to achieve a top-four placing in their respective divisions at the Ekurhuleni district trials held earlier in the year.
Seventeen members of the Goju Kai Bedfordview Karate Academy were awarded Ekurhuleni colours for all-styles karate at an awards evening held on November 1 in Boksburg.
To qualify for Ekurhuleni karate colours, the athletes had to achieve a top-four placing in their respective divisions at the Ekurhuleni district trials held earlier in the year.
Once selected for the Ekurhuleni team, they had to compete at the Gauteng Karate Federation (GKF) trials held in February this year.
Ten of the dojo athletes then took a top-four position at the GKF all-styles karate trials and were subsequently selected to represent the Gauteng province at the Karate South Africa all-styles karate championships.
For this achievement, the following karateka were awarded Gauteng provincial all-styles karate colours for 2019: Jesse Sim, Leven Reddy, Priyanke Reddy, Marco Botha, Suzaan Botha, Nicolas Alves, Mikayla Alves, Connor Hundermark, Devin Bourbon, Matteo Erasmus and Troy Borges.
Jesse Sim, Leven Reddy, Kaylee Naidoo, Priyanke Reddy and Mikayla Alves were also awarded South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) approved Protea colours for all-styles karate after representing South Africa at various international tournaments.
“The Goju Kai Bedfordview Karate Academy has had a successful year and the karateka are all looking forward to competing at the 2020 Ekurhuleni all-styles karate trials,” said coach Russell Sim.
