“This day is important for the club because we get to share the wonderful work and journey of rooting the game of cricket in this socially and economically deprived part of Johannesburg. We have several youngsters that have risen through the ranks of this initiative and that is what makes us, as the club, want to keep continuing doing what we do to give back to the community,” said Joburg Cricket Club Indarin Govender.

The match was played under the “Lord’s Taverners Rules”.

Both sides batted for a maximum of 20 overs, with the team scoring the most runs declared the winner.

The two teams that played on the day was Joburg Cricket Club and Chatsworth Old Boys.

The purpose of the day was not to have a winner but for both teams to have fun in the name of raising funds.

The teams were mixed with old and young players which made the match even more interesting. Nkosinathi Mahlangu, Momentum CSI manager, said they are pleased to be part of the initiative because it benefits the youngsters in the area.

“We believe that a young person’s journey to success is through development and the club is using cricket.

Sport has an amazing way to bring people together and we have seen how the club’s initiative has really inspired youngsters in the area,” said Mahlangu.

Also, funds were raised through an art auction, where business leaders could make an offer.

The day was concluded with the cutting of the cake to celebrate Advocate George Bezos’s birthday. Bezo has also been very involved with the club over the years. Govender said they are grateful as a club for the support they have been receiving to ensure that they continue running their project.

“We are humbled by the commitment of business leaders to financial contribution to the club.

“We hope the new business leaders who are joining us will also see our vision and continue to support us.

“We want to continue working with the community and to increase and improve our community and social impact in this part of town,” said Govender.
