Morais waiting to go the distance

Morais had hoped to bring about change in South Africa and partnered up with the #ShutSADown movement.

Long-distance runner and Marais Steyn Park resident Nuno Morais is rearing to go as he prepares for his long-awaited run to Cape Town.

Initially scheduled to start on March 27 the run was postponed after the announcement of the lockdown.

Morais had hoped to bring about change in South Africa and partnered up with the #ShutSADown movement.

The 1 800km journey would have seen Morais hand over a letter of demand and solutions to parliament on behalf of the movement.

“The lockdown has been tough, there have been some ups and downs. I just want to get the run going, it’s even possible that I could have finished it by now.”.

Despite having his movement restricted by the regulations Nuno has tried to maintain his fitness in preparation for his run.

Each morning he runs 12km at a comfortable pace ensuring he doesn’t injure himself.

After running Morais does weight training and exercises his other muscle groups.

Besides exercising Morais maintains a healthy diet and practices intermittent fasting.

“When the announcement was made that I wasn’t allowed to run it hit me hard. I felt so deflated during those first few weeks and had to train around my house.”

Morais said the minute he is allowed to travel between provinces he will set out on his run.

Besides planning for his run to Cape Town Morais is in talks to have his second Winter Warm-up Drive later this year.

Morais encouraged community members considering to start running to start slow and not push themselves too hard.

“Don’t do ridiculous distances. Start with a brisk walk, add some jogging to your route and increase the distance over time.”
