Lions ready to roar post lockdown

With society adjusting to the “new normal”, members of Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy are hard at work to get back into shape.

With society adjusting to the “new normal”, members of Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy are hard at work to get back into shape.

Co-founder and coach Edson Makavan said the lockdown had a serious knock on the academy and was tough on the players.

“The players couldn’t socialise. They couldn’t play and their training had to change. For the Lions, who are like a family, it was very hard.

“The academy made use of social media platforms to communicate with players and to encourage them to keep training and keep fit,” said Makavan.

He said when the news broke that the players were allowed back on the court to train and start practising again, the players were elated.

“At the moment we are focusing on getting the players back in shape and working on their fitness.”

Co-founder and coach, Byron Pinheiro, said the academy follows all Covid-19 procedures when the players train.

“The player and the ball are sanitised, the players need to fill out specific details and their temperatures are taken,” said Pinheiro.

Pinheiro highlighted that although the academy is allowed to train the coaches are not pushing the limit just yet.

“We want to be safe and we want to be responsible while ensuring the academy is in top condition,” said Pinheiro.

Looking to the future the academy would like to install grandstands and erect floodlights around the court.
