Paddlers prepare for nationals

There was a great turnout from competitors arriving from all clubs from across the province.

The annual Gauteng Canoe Union (GCU) Marathon Championships were held on May 8 and 9 at the Victoria Lake Club in Germiston.
Saturday was the K1 and guppy events.
Marathon distances and the number of portages varied depending on the paddler’s age, the furthest being 21km with six portages to 6km with no portages for young and up-and-coming paddlers.
Paddlers from as young as nine years old to the great-grandmasters took part.
There was a great turnout from competitors arriving from all clubs from across the province.
Sadly, partly through the morning, the K1 and guppy events had to be cancelled on account of the weather.
Day two of the provincial champs started with ice-cold wind, but that did not deter the K2 competitors.
Majority of the paddlers used this as an integral part of their training for national marathon champs later this month in Cape Town.
