2386 support St Andrew’s Eco Trail

St Andrew’s High School for Girls had a memorable and successful day at its Eco Trail on July 21 at Gillooly’s Farm.

The Eco Trail included a parkrun with hopes to promote long-term fitness and wellness for families and to encourage participation in future parkruns, which people are free to join every Saturday.

The event gave the community the opportunity to support the Nelson Mandela 100 initiative as well as the uBambiswano Community Engagement Programme.

Park runners donated new stationery items and tekkies for children from the uBambiswano programme.

St Andrew’s School is an eco-school and showed support for local parks and bird life.

The school inspired participants to continue visiting the area and to keep it protected.

The event also assisted the Puppy and Kitty Haven in its efforts to collect food and blankets for shelter animals.

There were a total of 2 386 participants, unfortunately missing the world record of highest attendance at a parkrun by only 142 people.

1182 of the participants were from the school’s running club and 94 from uBambiswano, who were part of the 1382 first-timers who set a new world record for most first-timers at a parkrun event.

The donations received from St Andrew’s staff, parents, learners, Old Girls and uBambiswano children raised an astounding amount of just over R180 000.

St Andrew’s would like to thank Gillooly’s Farm Parkrun, St John’s Ambulance, 24/7 Security, GoldFields Kennel Club, Creaky Tree and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.

“It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the outdoors together, and the sense of community was very heart-warming,” said Eco Trail event organiser, Caterina Cannone.
