Municipality remains on alert
Residents should refrain from settling in low-lying areas and should use sand bags to channels flash-flood water away from residential structures.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) issued a statement with steps community members can take to prepare, prevent and mitigate the consequence of the recent heavy rains.
This follows the heavy rains of last week.
According to the statement, residents should refrain from settling in low-lying areas and should use sand bags to channels flash-flood water away from residential structures. Digging canals to take water away from residential structures, and clearing any debris that may block storm water drains, can help mitigate the effects of flooding.
Community members are advised to avoid crossing, on foot or vehicle, any low-lying bridges and roads. Residents should advise children to not to play in flash-flood water.
Residents should also ensure that shelter is provided for their pets.
Response teams have attended to some areas including Etwatwa, Daveyton and Tembisa which were affected by the heavy rains of last week. Disaster and Emergency Management Services, and other response agencies of the EMM remain on high alert, ready to attend to calls for assistance.
