Historic Piston Ring Club launches its first-ever Christmas market

The first ever Piston Ring Club Christmas Market was filled with Christmas-themed stalls as well as classic cars on display.

For the first time, the Piston Ring Club hosted a Christmas Market.

The event was held at Founders Hill, Lethabong, on November 23.

Chairperson of the Piston Ring Club, Donald Bennett, said Piston Ring is an old, classic car club. It has been running since 1970, predominantly for vehicles 20 years and older.

“Today we’re trying something new, which is the Christmas Market. We are reaching out to a wider spectrum of people, focusing primarily on Christmas gifts and homemade stuff. Today is particularly a once-off, and if it works, we’ll do the same one next year,” Bennett explained.

The club members meet once a month, on the third Sunday of the month. The chairperson said, “Generally, we display all the old cars and have a flea market here regularly. It is a family fun day.”

He added that twice a year, in March and September, they have a ‘swap meet’, featuring double the number of stalls.

Bennett explained that the theory behind this, years ago, was for people to bring all their old car parts and then swap with each other. It has developed into an extended flea market or a traders’ fair.

The chairperson said the club was launched in Johannesburg at the Old Queen’s High School. It then moved to the new Queen’s High School, then at a couple of venues in Modderfontein, before it finally settled where it currently is, in Lethabong.
