Daveyton charity organisation lends a helping hand to those in need during the Covid-19 pandemic

The organisation will appreciate donations of mealie meal, rice, samp, vegetables, canned food and soup bones.

A Daveyton charity organisation is lending a helping hand in the community by feeding more than 50 children and adults daily during the pandemic.

The organisation, known as Daveyton Stand-Up Committee, prepares soup, vegetables and bread or pap so they can feed the needy.

They receive bread daily from the Betlehem Catholic Apostolic Church in Etwatwa.

The founder of the organisation, Nsizwa Mahlangu, said the soup kitchen began since the national lockdown in March.

“We have always had a soup kitchen at a local church but we had to stop for a while because we had to look for new premises,” said Mahlangu.

“The soup kitchen is, however, so important in these difficult times because we saw that a lot of families are in our community are in need.”

Mahalungu said the organisations co-founder Morningstar Nkosi offered them her home to be used for the soup kitchen.

Nkosi said it has always been their mission to help the poor and vulnerable in the community when they started the organization in 2016.

She said the organisation assists learners with their studies after school, while they also teach them life skills, arts and culture so that they can keep busy.

“We also offer counselling and we assist families who can’t afford to bury their loved ones due to lack of funds,” said Nkosi.

Mahlangu thanked their team members for their patience and dedication, along with the Northfield Methodist Church Mission and outreach program which is run by Gog’Fran Caldwell, Khaya Mnyanda and Paul Masungure for donating food and masks.

The organisation will appreciate donations of mealie meal, rice, samp, vegetables, canned food and soup bones.
