In a recent interview with coach Ryan Macfarlane at the SuperSport United Soccer School (SSUSS) in Benoni, the school was informed they had developed an excellent online platform for all of their students to continue training from home.
“The site received an outstanding response and has had hundreds of children participating daily all over the country, ensuring that not only have they stayed fit and active during the lockdown, but they’ve managed to maintain and strengthen their football skills,” explained Macfarlane.
While this was a great initiative for the first part of lockdown, it became clear once lockdown was extended that more personal training sessions would have to take place between coaches and students online. SSUSS has been on a major drive to keep children engaged in their activities and have included live Facebook sessions from 8.30am to 10am on Saturday mornings, zoom coaching sessions which each participant joins in on three times a week, as well as private individual zoom coaching sessions as and when requested.

“Thus far the feedback from both parents and children has been very good,” said Macfarlane. Jody Schaper, who’s sons, Camden and Astin, train at SSUSS at the Benoni Country Club and at the SuperSport United FC Academy, said: “While many other sports facilities and football clubs have had to shut down entirely during lockdown, SSUSS took the opportunity to keep leading their players toward their skills and fitness goals, ensuring they’ve stayed ahead of the pack in all areas.”In these unprecedented times, Macfarlane feels it is important to keep changing to adapt to the new circumstances and that the soccer schools are constantly looking for innovative ways to keep players and parents happy given the current conditions.

“Although I’ve been fortunate enough to interact with my students via various online coaching platforms, I can?t wait for the day I can be back at the club training the children and running my five-a-side leagues again,” concluded Macfarlane.
