Startimers is back with a bang – Hairspray is on

Lights, camera and… Hairspray.

If you like dancing, hair products, the ’60s and the story of an underdog coming out on top, join Startime Players for their latest theatrical production.

The group is one of Benoni’s amateur dramatic societies, but looking at the actors, choreography and overall production value, one wouldn’t say they do it part-time.

Despite a few minor flaws in sound, the leads of Hairspray bring this classic tale to life with strong voices and convincing portrayals.

The society was able to enliven the large-scale story fully with the aid of the Willowoore High School drama and dance groups, which added several actors, dancers and singers to the mix.

The clever set changes and humour added a great deal to the show’s unique aesthetic.

The production was led by trio Vivian McDonald (director), Alice Davies (musical director) and Nicola Wessels (choreographer).

McDonald said it’s been a long time since Startime Players put on a big show.

“We have mainly put up revues in recent years and we wanted to come back with a bang,” she said.

“Hairspray is a fun, foot-tapping show and after the film it’s better known by people now.

“Without the town hall, we’ve used the All Souls Church for the last few shows, but it doesn’t have enough space for Hairspray, so we approached Willowmoore High School.

“They suggested we do a combined effort with their drama and dance groups, which we did.”

The director said there were several first-time actors on stage with this production, many of whom were nervous before opening night.

“They did phenomenally well. It’s wonderful to see them blossom on the stage.”

The show will run until the end of May, so grab your chance before tickets sell out.

Show times are:

• Fridays (May 19 and 26) – 8pm

• Saturdays (May 20 and 27) – 8pm

• Saturday (May 27) – 3pm

• Sundays (May 21) – 3pm

Ticket prices are R80 per person (8pm show) and R60 per person (3pm show).
