Attempts to curb livestock theft

The Crystal Park SAPS is conducting high visibility patrols and stop-and-searches to apprehend persons committing stock theft.

A total of 16 cases of stock theft have been reported to the police station since January, this year.

Cloverdene and Zesfontein have been worst affected, with each area having three reported cases.

Sector One CPF chairperson Amiel Maritz, said at a CPF meeting on August 7, that large numbers of livestock are stolen at a time.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said people must make sure their animals are locked up at night and that fences are intact.

She urged people to report those who transport livestock between 6pm to 6am, as it is illegal to transport livestock during those hours.

Five arrests were made in 2013 — three in April and two in August.

The Cullinan Stock Theft Unit is investigating these cases.
