Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said that residents who reported housebreaking cases suggested this was so.
“Most victims said they leave their homes for less than an hour, only to find them broken into upon their return,” said Sekele.
The process occurs so fast that owners suspect their movements are being watched.
“Residents suspect that job-seekers, who wait at street corners for potential employers, might be behind the robberies,” said Sekele.
“They suspect that, as soon as they leave their houses, the job-seekers either break in or send their buddies in cars to do so.
In response to this, police have started profiling the job-seekers.
“We also take their fingerprints, to investigate whether they have been involved in housebreaking or any other crimes,” said Sekele.
