The owner of the house saw what looked like a blanket in his old car when he awakened in the morning.
Upon investigating he found a baby wrapped up in a blanket.
The Benoni City Times spoke to a Daveyton woman who was taking care of the baby in the interim.
She wished to remain anonymous.
She said she suspected that the baby might have been placed in the car on Saturday.
“The street was busy, as there was a tombstone unveiling ceremony nearby, and we suspect whoever dumped the baby took advantage of the situation,” she added.
The woman, who also has a young baby, said she bathed the baby and fed him.
She wants to keep him, but police say there are legal procedures to be followed.
“Police were still trying to track down the mother, and the baby will be taken to hospital for a check up and then to a place of safety,” said police spokesman Capt Alfred Nakana.
