The 65-year-old Bryanston man appeared on Friday, October 18, on charges of reckless driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the man was sentenced to a fine of R20 000, or 18 months in jail.
The man handed himself over to the police on April 8, but only after they went knocking on his door.
They traced him through his car’s registration number and a spotlight holder picked up at the accident scene.
Joshua, of Randburg, was fishing in the Kleinfontein Dam with his grandfather, Leigh Acar, of Bredell, when they were attacked by three thugs, who beat Acar with a pipe and took his firearm, money and cellphone.
Joshua ran to the N12 to seek help from passing motorists.
Motorists in two cars saw the crying boy standing on the chevron, pleading for help, and slowed down, but a Mercedes-Benz, driving behind them, overtook them in the emergency lane and knocked him over.
Joshua catapulted over two cars and landed in the middle lane, on his head.
He was taken to Life The Glynnwood Hospital and was discharged the following day.
