ATM fraudsters nabbed in police trap

Police arrested three ATM fraudsters, after setting a trap for them on January 30.

The three men, travelling in a Toyota Avanza, stole an Actonville resident’s card while he was withdrawing money from an ATM.

The criminals distracted him while he was entering his personal identification number (PIN).

“They then swapped his card,” said police spokesman Mack Mngomezulu.

The victim then noticed a police vehicle refilling at a nearby petrol station, and rushed to inform the police.

When the officers reacted, the two men in the Toyota Avanza drove away, leaving one man behind.

“The police caught him and he confessed to have taken down the victim’s pin and said the card was with his accomplices, who drove away,” said Mngomezulu.

The officers convinced him to phone his accomplices and tell them to meet him in town, so they could withdraw the money.

“They agreed and were all arrested when they arrived.”

The three were expected to appear in Benoni Magistrates Court, on Friday, last week.
