Finally, there’s a new station commander for Benoni police

It’s official. The City Times can confirm that the Benoni Police Station has a new station commander.

Brig Poobalan Subbiah has confirmed, by telephone, that he has been appointed Benoni’s top cop and he will officially commence his duties on Monday, February 17.

The City Times will catch up with the new station commander in the coming week, to get his plans for Benoni as far as crime-fighting is concerned.

Benoni has, for long, had station commanders in an acting capacity since Brig Govindsamy Mariemuthoo’s removal from his post, 16 months ago.

This was after figures in the Gauteng Provincial Legislatures showed his prolonged absence from work since he took over the reins at the station some three years ago.

In March, last year, figures showed Mariemuthoo’s had taken 106 days of sick leave, 122 days of normal vacation and capped leave, as well as three days of family responsibility leave.
