Local councillor still missing after four years

It’s been over four years since Etwatwa councillor Godfrey Mbethe went missing, and the police are still searching for him.

Four men involved in his disappearance have been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison, but he has never been found.

Mbethe went missing on July 22, 2009, after withdrawing R7 000 from a bank in Benoni.

The bank’s CCTV video footage showed one of the suspects standing behind Mbethe in the bank, and also following him when he left the bank.

Several withdrawals, totalling R14 000, were made from Mbethe’s bank account on the same day.

Police later managed to track down all four men believed to be behind the councillors’ disappearance.

They were arrested in Vosloorus and Kwazulu-Natal.

They were charged with kidnapping, aggravated robbery and fraud, and later a murder charge was added.

Etwatwa police spokesman Sgt Timothy Masilela said though the Pretoria High Court found all four accused guilty of the crimes, Mbethe has never been found.

“We urge anyone with information that can assist in finding him to contact the police,” he added.

Masilela can be contacted on 082 332 4554.
