SASSAs new system for pin code users
A number of Benoni residents are concerned about the proof of life certification system that will be implemented by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), in coming weeks.

One Benoni resident expressed concern for the elderly who live in rural areas and who do not have access to cellphones, and how the new system will affect whether or not they receive their grants.
Sassa requests that social grant beneficiaries who use a PIN to access their social grants at an ATM or a store without fingerprint reader, confirm their proof of life certification every month, before a social grant can be accessed via a PIN.
According to Steve Mabona, Sassa senior marketing and communications manager, the first phase of the system was started in January, when 38 8000 beneficiaries were sent an SMS message and had to call to verify their proof of life certification as soon as they received the SMS.
“The second phase is expected is to start in March, when all social grant beneficiaries who did not receive an SMS in January, but are using a PIN to access their grant, must call and confirm their proof of life certification,” said Mabona.
The numbers to call for voice activation are 0860 690 717 (Telkom line, cellphone or public phone), or 082 1777 (free), if you use the free Sassa starter pack.
“The starter packs were issued during grant re-registration and can still be obtained from Sassa offices,” said Mabona.
“Once you have called, follow the voice prompt instructions so that your voice can be matched to your voice recording, which was taken during Sassa re-registration (the verification can be done in any language).
“When your voice print has been validated, the system will inform you that you have successfully verified and your social grant will be available immediately.
“If you have received an SMS but are unable to call due to ill-health, you must appoint a procurator to represent you during the requested home visit from the nearest Sassa offices,” said Mabona.
Mabona stated that, during the home visit, the procurator and beneficiary must be present for the voice recording of the procurator to be done.
“If you have not received an SMS, your grant will still be paid out,” he added.
