Lovell dies at 72
Lovell’s Lock and Key founder, Jack (Johnny) Henry Stanley Lovell (72), died on February 10.
His funeral service was held in the Benoni Central Methodist Church, on February 14.
Verna Lovell described her late husband as a loving, generous and helpful man.
“He was very good to pensioners, especially when he still ran Lovell’s Lock and Key, he would give them discounts,” said Irvin McQueen, his friend of 67 years.
“I would often tell him, you are a businessman, and he would just say, it will pay itself back.”
Lovell was born on January 30, 1942, in Germiston, and moved to Benoni with his family a few years later.
He attended Benoni Junior Primary School, Benoni West Primary School and Benoni High School.
He married Verna on January 30, 1960; they celebrated their 54th anniversary this year.
The couple have two sons, Gary and David.
Lovell initially worked for Master Key and, in October, 1977, established Lovell’s Lock and Key.
He retired from the business eight years ago.
During his youth he played a lot of soccer.
He was part of the Eastern Transvaal soccer team, moved to Benoni United,and then Boksburg Football Club.
He was also a big Newcastle United fan.
Verna added that he was also very good with his hands and did a lot of gardening.
“He loved his children and his family,” said Verna
McQueen added that Lovell was a very loyal friend and husband.
“Johnny will be fondly remembered by his wife, family, friends and strangers,” concluded McQueen.
He is survived by Verna and their two sons.
